This large decking area had a nautical feel to it. The client wanted to minimise the lighting while ensuring there was enough to make the many steps safe to navigate in poor light.Cabling infrastructure was installed under the decking while it was being built. We didn’t finalise the detail of the lighting fixtures until the decking was complete.
We had a few evening/night trial sessions where we connected sample light fittings with temporary cabling. Once we were happy that we had the right number, brightness and position of the light fittings did we commit to cutting into the decking.

Given the number of steps in the garden, it would have been easy to end up with rows of lights looking like a runway. The intention was to wash the light across the decking with the minimal amount of spots.
We used soft diffused lenses to combat the glare of the higher lights. This solved the potential issue that may occur for those sitting near the stairs.
We always like to give the client as much control over the lighting in the garden while not over complicating things. The large garden splits into three lighting aspects, the decking, the main garden planting and the children’s play area which can be controlled separately.
